On Batman, moms, and our need for others

thoughts from the first letter in the New Testament

Over at his fascinating substack, Shaun Usher shares a letter from a frustrated mom to ABC Television, written in 1966:

Ever since your program went on television, my son Barry, who is 5, insists on watching every Batman program. He gets so excited watching Batman on TV that I have a difficult time getting him to bed when the program is finished.

If it isn’t too much trouble could you just once, at the end of the show say, “And now it is time for Barry Strauss to brush his teeth and go to sleep.”

It would be a big help.

I had initially planned to open my message this past Sunday at church with this letter, but it ended up on the cutting room floor. But I love how it humorously reminds us that moms need help - but, even more, how we all need others on the journey.

The Apostle Paul knew this, and shared this in the first book in the New Testament that was ever written - 1 Thessalonians. Though it is placed near the back of the NT in 3 short pages, 1 Thessalonians was, according to Beverly Roberts Gaventa, the first written evidence we have of Christianity.

So, when you’re reading 1Thess, you’re reading the earliest written words of Paul on the Christian faith. And he’s clear: we need each other. Give a listen.
